About the Image

The photo shows an O’odham giwho in the Amerind Museum.

The photo shows an O’odham giwho in the Amerind Museum. This object is called a burden basket by English speakers. It is used like a backpack. The black-and-white photo shows an O’odham woman wearing a giwho (photo National Museum of the American Indian). Although not used often today, gigiwho are used for special events. In the left photo, a member of the Tohono O’oham Nation’s Youth Council proudly wears a traditional giwho during the 2007 opening of the National Museum of the American Indian (photo by Bernard Siquieros). We selected this object to remind readers that O’odham families lived in the San Pedro Valley for centuries. O’odham moved away from the area in the AD 1700s. They probably used many gigiwho during their travels.
