Hohokam or historic O’odham. Carved stone pipes.

O’odham Traditional Life Project

About the image: Hohokam or historic O’odham. Carved stone pipes. The Amerind uncovered a cache of 14 stone pipes at the site of Paloparado near Nogales, Arizona. The pipes were found in a pit in an area of the site’s later occupations. Those later occupations of the site include the Classic Hohokam period (AD 1150-1450) through the Protohistoric and historic periods for the O’odham of the Santa Cruz River Valley (AD 1450-1800). It is thought that these pipes, carved from steatite, sandstone, and scoria, may have been used by mature men as among the historic O’odham.
