This lesson will take you and your class on a road trip across the United States to explore the federally recognized Native Nations, their Constitutions, and Tribal Sovereignty. Did you know that there are 574 federally recognized tribal governments (variously called nations, tribes, bands, pueblos, communities, and native villages) in the United States? Approximately 229 of these ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse nations are located in Alaska; the other federally recognized tribes are located in 35 other states. A tribal government is part of a Sovereign Nation that interacts with the federal government and has legal jurisdiction over its land. In short, Tribal Governments are as diverse as the land they inhabit.
