Introduction
A lesson in the How Were Native Lands Lost to Colonizers? – Part 1 History course.

About the Image:
This basket is at the Amerind Museum. A Chiricahua Apache family left this basket in a rocky shelter in Cochise County over 140 years ago. They probably had plans to return to it, but they never had the chance. The Chiricahua Apache were removed from their homeland and forced to live far away. As you will learn—for thousands of years this entire continent was home to Native American communities governed by their own traditions. In the last few centuries, millions of Native Americans were forced from their homelands by outside governments. Like the Chiricahua Apache, many were removed by military force. In spite of this, Native communities today are thriving, maintaining their vibrant traditions. Their histories are important for all of us to learn.
